Views from the Mixing Bowl: Putting Drake on Cake with Baker Joy Wilson
Sometimes the best ideas start out as a joke. About a year ago, Joy Wilson (@joythebaker) –– a popular food blogger, cookbook author and photographer –– was randomly thinking about Drake, how his name rhymes with cake and how funny it would be to write some of his words on her own creations.
“He’s a poet,” says Joy, whose @champagnepapi-inspired works have included lyrics like “Last name ever, first name greatest” and “What a time to be alive.” “I listen to a lot of Drake, take a few of his gems and write them in frosting.”
Once Joy finishes a new Drake Cake, she makes sure to share them with friends and neighbors — even if they’re not in on the joke. “This older lady lived down the street from me and I would give her my cakes,” says Joy. “They always had crazy lyrics on them and she never said a word. I think she thought of me as this crazy girl that wrote weird things on cakes. I gave her ‘Toodles to you bitches’ and she was like, ‘Thanks, honey! Right on.’ There was no explanation.”
