João Bernardino (@joao.bernardino) lives and works in an industrial hub outside the Portuguese city of Porto, providing ideal fodder for his construction site obsession. The designer, illustrator and professor says he uses photography to build and document his own visual language. “The construction of my visual speech was what sparked my designer mind to jump into photography like I never had before,” he says.

João, who is interested in society’s transition from the industrial to the Internet age, spends hours photographing machinery, cranes and containers. “I think I am capturing a neglected part of our recent history, a less trendy one, a more dusty one,” he says.
