“Honey, we just bought a doughnut shop.” These are the famous words Ralph Primo Sr., owner of Primo’s Donuts LA (@primosdonutsla), said to his wife after (what was supposed to be) a quick stop for a treat with their son Ralph Primo Jr. That was 60 years ago next month. “We have three generations coming in,” Ralph Jr. says. “We have grandparents bringing in their grandkids. They tell me, ‘My granddad brought me in when I was my grandson’s age.’” Social media has helped the business skyrocket, but at the end of the day, it’s always about the doughnuts and the love. “It’s a brand, but it’s not a brand.
