In artist Frank Holzenburg’s (@woodcastles) world, a beaver can gnaw on a match, a dinosaur can lurk on an index finger and a bear can dance on an eraser. Frank creates detailed drawings, only an inch or so tall, and then breathes in life by taking photos of his characters with everyday objects. “It’s incredibly fun to portray the world on paper in miniature form,” he says. Frank, a former elementary school teacher in Kassel, Germany, now spends up to five hours each day in his workshop creating art. His drawings are inspired by medieval book illustrations, but Frank believes there’s a practical, modern advantage that translates to his tiny works: “In the age of the smartphone, everything has to fit into a few square inches.”
